Built for land rather than buildings. Camouflaged, solar-powered, and connected over its own 4G SIM, it sends alerts from places with no power, no Wi-Fi and nobody around. Built-in GPS means you can locate it — useful on large plots, and useful if someone walks off with it.

Three reasons people choose this one

• GPS built in. The only camera in our range with it. Find it on a large property, or track it if it's taken.
• 940nm no-glow infrared. Invisible at night, so it doesn't announce itself to wildlife or anyone else.
• H.265 encoding. Roughly half the file size of an older H.264 camera at the same quality. On a metered 4G connection that is the difference between topping up every month and barely noticing.

Two things to sort before you head out

1. Buy a microSD card. One is not included, and without it the camera has nowhere to keep your footage. Any card up to 128GB works. This is the single most important thing to have ready on day one.

2. Understand the SIM. The SIM in the box comes with 100MB of trial data — a setup allowance, not a data plan. Enough to install the camera, test it and watch a few dozen clips. It has no expiry date once you activate it, so it waits for you, but it will run out.

After that you have two choices, and you are not locked in: top up inside the Ucon app, or fit your own nano-SIM from AT&T, T-Mobile or any US carrier and add it to your existing plan. Top-up and cloud pricing are set by the network and shown in the app — check there for the current rate.

A tip that saves most of your data: set the camera to send a photo alert rather than video and keep the footage on the memory card. A still is a fraction of the size of a clip, and you still hear about it the moment something moves. This is exactly why the card matters.

Alerts, sharing and storage

How alerts reach you. The Ucon app sends a push notification the moment the camera triggers. It does not place a phone call, and we'd rather say so than have you find out later. One thing worth doing at setup: a phone on Do Not Disturb silences push notifications by default. On iPhone, allow Ucon through Settings → Focus → Do Not Disturb → Allowed Apps. On Android, set the Ucon notification channel to Priority. Two minutes, and it's the difference between hearing about something at the time and finding out in the morning.

Share it with the family. You can share the camera to other people's Ucon accounts, and you decide what each person is allowed to do — live view, playback, microphone. There's no limit on how many people you share with; three can watch the live feed at once, and one person can use the mic at a time.

Cloud storage is optional. Around $4 a month for a single camera with a 7-day free trial, and less if you pay six-monthly or yearly. The platform sets that price rather than us, so check the current rate in the app. The memory card covers you without it, and most owners never subscribe.

Is this the right camera for you?

Good for — hunting, wildlife, acreage, tree lines, fence perimeters, remote gates, unattended plots.

You'll need — 4G signal at the location, and a microSD card up to 128GB (not included).

Sees in the dark, two ways — 940nm infrared for black-and-white footage out to 25m, or a white LED that fires on a trigger to give you the shot in colour. The infrared is invisible; the colour light is not. Switch to infrared-only in the app if you'd rather the camera stayed hidden.

A note on resolution: stills are 3MP. The 8MP and 16MP still settings are software interpolation, not extra optical detail — we quote the sensor so you know what you're actually getting. If you want the sharper stills, our 4MP trail camera is $3 more; it just doesn't have GPS.
